Thayer Academy, an independent college preparatory day school established in 1877, has hired EcoMotion to provide “hands-on sustainability coordination” to formalize its sustainability program. Located in Braintree, Massachusetts, Thayer Academy is situated on a 34 acre campus with ~700 students, ~475 in the Upper School and ~225 in the Middle School (grades 6 – 8). Students are drawn mostly from Boston’s MetroWest and South Shore communities. Fully 100% of the students take part in extracurricular activities, one being the Recycling Club at the Middle School that helps manage and promote its recycling program, including waste building material recycling during new construction. In addition, Thayer students were integral to the design process of the Environmental Science House on campus.

Thayer has invested wisely in its outstanding physical plant; the campus is made up of eight buildings and 54 classrooms. LED lighting and motion sensors can be found throughout campus. And the campus is taking sustainability seriously too. Local food sourcing is emphasized in dining operations. EcoMotion is excited to support Thayer in building a community culture of environmental stewardship. EcoMotion’s initial services are to establish and manage Thayer’s Sustainability Committee, to identify outdoor classroom and gardening locations to optimize existing spaces, and to implement a composting program in the dining hall.
