Rural Electrification in the Solomon Islands

EcoMotion is pleased to be consulting in the developing world, in this case in the Solomon Islands. Working for Pacific Clean Energy Partners, (PCEP) headed up by our colleague Rob Pratt, EcoMotion’s Ted Flanigan is serving as the Director of Rural Electrification for its Solomon Islands project.

The Solomon Islands is an archipelago in the South Pacific, northeast of Australia, just east of Papua New Guinea, and near Fiji. The Melanesian country is made up of six major islands and over 1,000 small islands… most without power grids. Fully 80% of the people there lack access to electricity;  those that have it pay a dollar a kilowatt-hour for it.

EcoMotion is supporting PCEP is the deployment of off-grid solutions such as solar suitcases that provide small PV panels, LED lights, cell phone charging… and for those that can afford it, radios and televisions. Community systems there will support refrigeration which is key for economic development of the country’s fishing industry, and an important link in extending the cold chain to support health care. Meanwhile, PCEP is developing the Solomons’ first utility-scale project and bringing energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions to the country’s major industries.
