Irvine Firm Represents California at Asia Clean Energy Forum
Ted Flanigan of EcoMotion Stresses Importance of Individual Effort in Closing Keynote Address
The Third Annual Asia Clean Energy Forum was held June 3-5, 2008 in Manila, Philippines, co-sponsored by the Asian Development Bank and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Ted Flanigan, President of EcoMotion, was invited to join 550 other leaders from 49 countries to address Asia’s energy challenge – balancing growth and sustainable development. Sessions allowed project developers, the financial community and policy makers to share information and exchange best practices: Flanigan was asked by Peter du Pont, Chief of Party, USAID, to present selected policies and programs from California.
“Regulatory design is essential to laying the foundation for investment in clean energy,” said Flanigan. “The California Solar Initiative represents one model which has been successfully operating for 18 months, and with which EcoMotion has significant experience. EcoMotion has also studied the German Feed-in Tariff model, and we visited Germany last year for a closer look.” Flanigan compared the two models at one of the first break-out sessions of the conference.
Flanigan was also asked to give the motivational closing keynote address. He saluted the dedicated professionals working on all aspects of Asia’s energy future, including programs and policies for access to energy, power plant efficiency, sustainable development of biofuels, coal utilization options, demand side management, clean energy finance, emissions reductions, carbon markets, and energy solutions for cities. Then, Flanigan introduced EcoMotion’s motto of “The Power of the Increment.”
The Power of the Increment rests on the belief that major change is not only tenable but inevitable if individuals seize a vision and take action. Flanigan told stories to illustrate: the transformation of Iceland’s energy economy thanks to geothermal development, cooperatively-owned wind systems that have arisen in the harbor in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the citizen-supported solar revolution in Germany.
